From April 1 to April 7, 2020, The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is once again kicking off its global campaign of education and awareness about the risks of asbestos exposure and the need for a ban with Global Asbestos Awareness Week. The event, now in its 16th consecutive year, will focus on different aspects throughout the week which include:
- Banning the mining, manufacturing, and use of asbestos
- Preventing asbestos exposure
- Increasing compliance and enforcement of existing laws and regulations
While there will be no in-person gatherings because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ADAO will utilize online technology and feature different videos, guest blogs, and PSAs to present information from doctors, activists, and victims of asbestos diseases. The annual candlelight vigil which typically takes place on the last day of the event will now be held online. Additionally, the ADAO’s 16th Annual International Asbestos Awareness and Prevention Conference (April 3 to 5, 2020) has been postponed.
Since 2004, the ADAO has dedicated their efforts to educating the public not only of the risks associated with asbestos exposure, but how to manage and prevent asbestos diseases. There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure and often times those who have been exposed were not even aware. The lack of knowledge regarding asbestos in the workplace and at home has led thousands to suffer from lung cancer or mesothelioma (a rare, aggressive and typically fatal cancer that is only caused by exposure to asbestos).
While cancer treatments continue to improve and clinical trials offer hope, asbestos-caused illnesses can be prevented through awareness and education. Last November, The Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2019 (ARBAN) was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. If this should pass, the bill would ban asbestos use and importation within the year.
