World Cancer Awareness Day: February 4, 2020
In the midst of National Cancer Prevention Month, there is World Cancer Awareness Day, which falls annually on February 4. During World Cancer Day, communities educate people about cancer risks, signs and symptoms, and available treatments and support. Risk factors for cancer can range from unhealthy lifestyles, to genetic factors, to hazardous exposures, like asbestos. It’s also a chance to remember those who lost their battle to cancer, rejoice for those who have survived, and support research that aids in finding a cure.
Even thought cancer research has been around for centuries, researchers and scientists are constantly developing new strategies and theories to develop the best ways to detect, treat, and prevent cancer.
Three types of research:
- Basic Research – In the multi-tiered research process, basic research is the foundation in which new ideas and theories are developed, and techniques and technology are tested, often by using the Scientific Method. The Scientific Method is a series of steps that involves formulating a hypothesis, testing that theory, analyzing the results, and coming to a scientific conclusion that either refutes or supports the initial hypothesis. Basic research is done mainly at research institutes and universities.
- Translational Research – Translational research applies the findings from basic research to medical practice. It is here where experimental clinical trials are formed and promising new treatments are potentially developed. Treatment regimens are also typically initially developed during translational research.
- Clinical Research – Clinical research focuses on the pharmaceutical development of cancer research and the safety and efficacy of medicines, medical devices and procedures, and treatment applications. Clinical research is necessary for a drug, procedure, or device to be cleared by the Food and Drug Administration and ultimately put into use.
Mesothelioma is perhaps the most well known cancer linked to asbestos exposure. While statistically rare, mesothelioma affects close to 3,000 Americans each year. Prognosis is poor; typically one year after diagnosis and there is no cure. However, a diagnosis is not without hope. There are a variety of treatments available and a number of ongoing clinical trails, which would not have been possible if it was not for cancer research.
